In-State Merit Scholarship Renewal Criteria

First-Year Students

The criteria below are for the following awards:

UMaine Black Bear Scholarship
UMaine Dean’s Scholarship
UMaine Flagship Scholarship
UMaine Presidential Scholarship
UMaine National Merit Semi-Finalist Scholarship

General Scholarship Information

  • Scholarships are renewable for up to a total of 8 semesters provided that the student meets renewal criteria listed below.
  • Scholarships are disbursed in two equal installments, one at the beginning of the fall semester and one at the beginning of the spring semester, as credit toward the student’s tuition account.
  • The scholarship must be used within a period not to exceed five years.

Renewal Criteria

  • Student must meet Satisfactory Academic Progress (see Undergraduate Catalog for more information).
  • Student must maintain full-time enrollment (no less than 12 graded credit hours per semester) at his/her current tuition status leading to an undergraduate degree at UMaine.
  • Student must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better as measured each academic year at the end of the spring semester.

Other Terms

  • Understand that if the student’s cumulative GPA falls below the required level or if the student fails to complete a minimum of twelve graded credit hours per semester, the student will no longer be eligible to receive the scholarship and it will be discontinued.
  • Understand that awards may be adjusted so that the total of all scholarships and awards does not exceed the cost of attendance as determined by the Office of Student Financial Aid and federal guidelines.
  • Understand that any changes to the student’s tuition status will result in an adjustment to the merit scholarship amount.
  • Students enrolling in 15 credit hours per semester are eligible for the full semester amount of their merit scholarship (one half of the annual scholarship amount). For students enrolling in 12 to 14 credits, the dollar amount of the award will be pro-rated based on the number of enrolled credits. Students enrolling in fewer than 12 credit hours per semester are not eligible for their merit scholarship.

Transfer Students
