The Elementary Education program builds on strong partnerships between the College of Education and Human Development and school districts locally, statewide and internationally. Students combine academic work in a university environment with field-based work in a wide range of settings. Our students are prepared to teach and work in diverse educational situations.

The College of Education and Human Development has a nationally recognized Advising Center that assists students during their undergraduate experience at UMaine. At the Advising Center, full time professional advisors partner with students to create an academic plan that is unique to each undergraduate. The “AC” can help students weave in field experiences, a Study Abroad semester, minors or a double major.

We also offer introductory seminars to acquaint students with program requirements and expectations.

Our students learn how to utilize technology to enhance the learning of K-8 students. They also complete a concentration that allows them to specialize in an area that might further their professional opportunities.

Elementary education majors at UMaine have the opportunity to work close to the community of the College of Education and Human Development, yet take advantage of the vast resources available at Maine’s largest and most comprehensive university. The College of Education and Human Development’s teacher certification programs are nationally accredited, providing a high standard that not only prepares for state of Maine certification, but for certification in other U.S. states as well.

Education majors are in the field working with school aged children in their first year. During the process of taking foundational courses and experiencing hands-on learning at local schools and after school programs, students are able to feel confident in their program of study.
