 Sustainable Food Systems

College of Earth, Life, and Health Sciences

The B.S. in Sustainable Food Systems explores the interconnected activities from production to consumption of food or generation of food waste. The program has five concentrations: Climate Change and Food Systems, Food Processing and Innovation, Justice, Equity, and Community Development, Leadership and Management, and Plant and Animal Production Systems.

  • Explores the interconnectivity between agriculture, natural sciences, and social sciences through the lens of sustainability.
  • Offers students the opportunity to gain knowledge and skills in plant and soil sciences, food science and human nutrition, animal and veterinary sciences, as well as social sciences.
  • Addresses complex socioecological problems, allowing students to develop critical thinking skills.
  • Emphasizes hands-on learning, with the opportunity to work with a variety of professionals in the capstone service course.
  • Is distinct from other programs in the United States. We focus on two areas that are underrepresented in other sustainable food systems programs: equity and climate change.
