Math Placement Testing

All students entering UMaine may need to be placed in the correct math classes. If you have a 670 on the math portion of the SAT, or a 29 on the math portion of the ACT, then you can be enrolled in any math class up to MAT 126 (Calculus I). Certain prior math coursework may also eliminate the need to take the exam. Additionally, some majors may not require it.

Please visit the Math Placement Exam web page to determine if you need to take the exam.

To take the exam, wait 24 hours after activating your UMS account and then:

• Go to ALEKS.
• Log in using your UMS ID and password. Call IT Help, 207.581.2506, if you need help logging in.
• In order to begin you will need to download the Respondus Browser.
• To begin the placement exam select: Get Started.
  • You may be asked to complete a survey and a Tools Tutorial before you are able to complete the placement exam. Once you have completed the survey and Tutorial ALEKS will give you the opportunity to select the exam.
